"Weather affects us everyday, no matter where we are. When the weather becomes severe, it's important that public is aware of the situation so they can prepare appropriately.  I think it is important to give to your community and providing the most accurate and up-to-date weather information is just one  thing I can do to help."

meet matt.

A climate and weather enthusiast and self-proclaimed "weather geek" since my early years, I'm a Meteorologist and Weather Blogger located in Metro Atlanta and central Georgia.

In addition to being a morning meteorologist for 13WMAZ (July 2014-present) and weather producer with CNN, I keep the community up-to-date on weather as it happens through my use of social media and I study and write about severe weather and global climate trends for EarthSky.org.

I'm constantly looking for opportunities in radio and social media. I am available for speaking engagements and as an expert resource on the topics of forecasting, global climate trends, and the role of social media in meteorology.

I spend a significant amount of time writing about local and global weather and climate trends on my blogs Athens, GA Weather and WeatherGlobe, which is featured on EarthSky.org.  I also contribute to iWeathernet.

In addition to blogging, I am a pioneer in weather-related social media. My Twitter feed, AthensGAWeather has been keeping followers informed with real-time weather updates since 2009. In an effort to reach as many people as possible, I offer updates and timely information through Facebook and YouTube. In fact, I was one of the first people to utilize #gawx and #athensga, which have grown in popularity and are frequently used by others.

My blog posts and Tweets have been picked up in a variety of local and national news outlets, including The Washington Post, Athens Banner-Herald, NASA and The National Association of Science Writers.

I am happy to provide expert information to journalists and to be a guest blogger for science, weather and climate related sites.

Please contact me with any potential opportunities.

"I have been following the weather for as long as I can remember, probably since the age of three. I was always looking outside, watching the local news, and I vividly remember Hurricane Andrew and the storm of the century, even though I was only 6 to 8 years old."

résumé

I've been in love with weather since I was three years old. I was fascinated with tornadoes and hurricanes, and would run into the living room every evening to watch the local weather report. I love the fact that weather always changes and there is always something new and exciting to learn - just when you think you have seen it all, you haven't.

My dream job:

I enjoy weather forecasting and sharing weather knowledge with the public to keep them out of harm's way. My dream job is a chief meteorologist role in major market.

My competitive advantage:

I think there are a lot of people out there who go in, do their job, leave work, and call it a day. Weather is more than a job to me; I love the science and I follow it around the clock. I am always available when severe weather strikes. If I am needed, I am there.

Social media is a huge part of my career, and I've been reporting the weather via Twitter since 2009. In addition to understanding the science, we have an obligation to stay ahead of technology and media trends to reach the most people, keep them informed, and in some cases, save lives.

In my leisure time:

My other love is music - I played trumpet in the UGA Redcoat Marching Band as an undergrad.  I also play piano and guitar, and enjoy singing and writing music. In 2015, I released a self-titled album of original songs, available on Amazon and iTunes.
